John founded STJ Advisors LLP in 2008 having provided independent equity capital markets advice through St John Advisers Limited and other affiliated partnerships since 2005. Prior to that John had spent 20 years in investment banking focused on equity capital markets since 1993. Positions held during his career include, Chairman (consultant) ECM Nomura, Global head of ECM at Dresdner Kleinwort, Co-Global Head of ECM Commerzbank, Co-Global Head of ECM Lehman Brothers, European Head of ECM Citigroup, Director ECM Kleinwort Benson Limited.

He has advised Governments on privatisations in most of the major European countries and has executed equity offerings in most major jurisdictions worldwide. John has been responsible for some of the most significant innovations in equity capital markets in recent years including the first Rights issue auction process for the record E15bn France Telecom rescue rights issue (IFR Equity deal of the year), the first IPO auction process for the Pages Jaunes E1.4bn IPO (IFR IPO of the Year), the first competitive IPO process for the Inmarsat IPO as well as others.
